How can I add my Google calendar to Kona?

Kona allows you to add events from your Google calendar into your Kona space’s calendar.  Your Kona calendar will be updated on a periodic basis when the events on the Google calendar are updated.  This helps centralize all your calendar activity into one place – Kona!

Note: If you change your Google password, you will need to remove and then re-add the feed in to Kona.

  1. Go to the Google calendar you want to share and open Calendar Settings.
  2. Scroll down until you see the “My Calendars” section.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of “My Calendars” and choose Settings.

4. Choose the Calendars tab.

5. Click on your name to be taken to the Google calendar details screen.

 6. Scroll down to the “Calendar Address” section.

7. Click on the green ICAL link next to “Private Address”.

8. Copy the link in the popup window.  For example:

9. Open the Kona space that includes the calendar you want to import your Google Calendar into.

10. Choose the Events tab.

11. Click the drop-down arrow located to right of the word Calendars under the “Add an event” entry bar and choose “Add Calendar”.

12. Paste the link you copied from the Google Private Address popup window into the “Subscribe to a calendar outside of Kona” popup.  Note: If the calendar is private, you will need to add an "s" after the word "webcal” or “http.”  Note: You may see the icon of a red circle with a line through it but you can still click into the “Add iCal URL” field and paste your URL into the box.

13. Click Add.

You will now be able to view your Google events on your Kona space and My Kona calendars.

Note: You may need to refresh your browser to see the Google events on your calendars.

Worked great.  I had to make the calendar public in Google first - may be worth adding that step to the tutorial :-)

There is an option to Manage Calendars but once in that screen there does not appear to be anything you can do to actually manage anything about the calendars.  Am I missing something?  How do you remove a calendar once you have added it?  Show/Hide? Any other management tasks associated with calendars?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Under "Manage Calendars", if you hover on the name of the external feed, you will see an "X" appear at the right side of the pop-up.  You can click that "X" to remove the calendar.  Add and remove, and view of which calendars you are feeding in, are the only options under Manage Calendars.

    Thanks,

    Christine

    Hi Christine,

Unfortunately that "X" does not appear for me.  Could it be that I am not the owner of the space, or that I was not the one that added the calendar, that is keeping the "X" from appearing?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

That is correct.  If you did not add the calendar to the space, then you would not have the X to remove it from the space's calendar.

It would be extremely beneficial to be able to at least hide/unhide a calendar for any space whether you are the owner or not.  The overlapping calendars on some of our spaces, and particularly the My Kona Events Tab.  We need some form of filter.

Let me restate that... The overlapping calendars, particularly on the My Kona Events Tab, need some type of filter in order to give some order to the chaos that can be created from multiple calendars showing up at the same time.

    Hi Ryan,

Another user logged a feature request for that same suggestion here: http://support.kona.com/entries/22055242-the-ability-to-mark-indiv-events-as-not-shown-on-the-my-kona-calendar.  I would recommend clicking the Thumbs Up button to vote it up in popularity as the votes help us determine features for future releases.

    Thanks,

I am getting a "URL is invalid" statement on invoking the add.  The URL is nothing more than the copy as instructed, as below:

    http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/hawaii.edu_099ekij0gk37pgtt219okud6bo%40group.calendar.google.com/private-2f15d85d916df8baea9fb4084532c129/basic.ics

    Hints?

    Hello,

Please try adding an "s" at the beginning so that it would be https://.

    Thank you,

    Hi Sandro,

Please add an "s" to the beginning of the URL so it starts with "webcals://".  You can leave the rest the same and then it should work.

What is the yellow triangle with what I think looks like exclamation point mean at the end of the iCal link under the Manage Calendars window?

I'm getting what Eric Admin refers to as well. When I hover over the yellow triangle, I see a message that seems to say that the feed from my Google calendar is invalid, with some sort of invalid parameter. The link was cut and pasted from my Google iCal private address link, includes an "s" at the end of http, and has worked with other calendars I've shared the link with. Any assistance would be appreciated. Side note: Just found Kona and love what it offers, thanks to the team for all the work of creating and maintaining it.

    Hi Eric & Jeff,

I've confirmed with development that the yellow triangle indicates a warning when loading the ICS feed but several different things could cause the warning.  It indicates that some events may not have been able to be processed.  If either of you would like us to dig into a specific warning or calendar feed, please open a support case.  It would also help if you were willing to share the feed with us temporarily.

    Thank you,

    Christine
