How does the @mention feature work?

When you want to ensure that someone is getting the information you post in the conversation, you can use the @mention feature to get their attention.  Simply type @ and then their name.  Kona will show a drop-down menu where you can select the person’s name.  When that person next logs in to Kona, they will see the conversation with a “You are mentioned” notification, even if they had muted the conversation.  By default, the @mention will send the user an email with the comment where they were mentioned.  The email settings can be updated in your profile.  You can also use @mention to specify groups.

Note: If you type @ but do not select someone or a group from the drop-down list, the “You are mentioned” notification and un-muting will not occur.  The @mention text changes to a red box with the name when the feature is enabled.

I would like to have more than one @Mention in my posts, but not include "everyone". How do I add more than one @ for the same individual post? I have tried several approaches, but all have been unsuccessful. It creates an unnecessarily long thread if I copy the same comment again with another @Mention. Pleas advise. Thank you.

    Hi Daniel,

You can have more than one @ mention in the same post.  I did notice a defect that I've logged when doing the second @ mention though where after typing "@" the drop-down menu of names doesn't appear unless you delete the "@" and then re-type it.

Another option is use to use Groups.  If the people you want to mention are all in a group, you could select that group from the drop-down menu and they will all be notified.  The space owner can set up groups on the People Page of the space (click "Manage" under the Space Members section on the right side).

    Thanks,

    Christine

Apparently if you enter a space after the first @Mention, you can get a second @Mention with the drop down box.

I would like to suggest, if it's possible, for the @ feature to work in the preview of the conversation rather than having to open up the conversation detail.

    Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the feedback.  I have added this as a feature request for you here:  http://support.kona.com/entries/24228453--mention-to-work-in-preview-of-the-conversation.  I would recommend clicking the Thumbs Up "Me Too" button to vote for it and move it up in popularity.  The votes help us determine features for future releases.

I was having problems using this feature because i was trying to add a mention after i had already entered some text.  The @Mention feature only works at the "End" of the Conversation box.  probably not a problem once you know how to use it :)

    Hi Joshua,

We do have some quirks with the @mention feature that we're working on.  Sometimes we find that typing some text will allow you to then type @ and get the drop-down menu or sometimes backspacing will get it for you.  I'm glad you found a way that works for you.

I've had trouble adding @ mentions in the middle of a conversation -- it works inconsistently. Works better if I start the conversation with the mention.

What I can't get to work is adding an @ mention after I've completed a conversation (but before sending it.) Occasionally I'll comment and then realize it's important for someone specific to see if -- when I try to add an @, it doesn't work.

    Hi Mary Beth,

We have a few @mention defect corrections that will be in our next release, currently scheduled for Oct 22nd, that I believe will correct what you are experiencing.  If you are still encountering @mention issues after that time, I would recommend creating a support case so we can investigate your specific issues.

    Thanks,

    Christine

Also, if I add an individual to a conversation (using add person option in the people tab), they do not immediately show up in the list of individuals available for @ mentions. Do I need to refresh first? Does the individual need to accept first?

    Hi Mary Beth,

Yes, right now you would need to refresh in order to be able to @mention them.  We have an open ticket to not need to refresh in a future version.
